How Chiropractic Care Supports Healthy Aging

Episode Notes:

In this episode, Dr. Hunter Schultz of 920 Chiropractic Health & Injury Care in Green Bay tackles one of the most universal topics there is: aging. Rather than dreading the process, Dr. Schultz reframes aging as something we can actively shape through the right care and lifestyle choices. He draws on real patient experiences from his practice to illustrate how chiropractic care plays a meaningful role in maintaining mobility, reducing pain, and supporting overall wellness as we get older. Whether you’re in your 40s or your 70s, this episode offers practical insight into how proactive chiropractic care can help you live with more comfort and confidence at any age.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Hunter Schultz with nine twenty Chiropractic Health and Injury Care here in Green Bay, and today we’re talking about something that honestly affects every single one of us — aging. Now, I know that word can make some people cringe a little. But here’s the thing — aging itself isn’t the enemy. It’s how we age that matters. And that’s exactly what I want to talk with you about today.

Because here’s what I see in my practice all the time. People come in and they say, “Doctor Schultz, I just want to feel like myself again.” They’re not asking to be twenty-five. They just want to move without pain, sleep through the night, keep up with their grandkids, stay active in the community. And honestly? That’s one hundred percent achievable for most people. You just have to be intentional about it.

So let’s talk about what actually happens to our bodies as we get older — and what we can do to support ourselves through it.

First, let’s talk about the spine. As we age, the discs between our vertebrae — those little shock absorbers — they start to lose some of their moisture and flexibility. The joints can get stiffer. The muscles that support everything start to lose some of their tone if we’re not actively working to maintain them. And what does all that lead to? Stiffness in the morning, aches that linger, maybe some balance issues. Sound familiar?

Here’s what’s interesting though. A lot of that stiffness and discomfort isn’t just inevitable decline. A lot of it comes from how we’re moving — or more accurately, how we’re not moving. When joints aren’t moving through their full range, they get even stiffer. It becomes a cycle. Chiropractic adjustments help break that cycle by restoring proper motion to the joints of the spine and the rest of the body. When things are moving the way they’re supposed to, your body functions better. It’s really that straightforward.

Now here’s the second thing I want you to think about — your nervous system. This is something people don’t always connect to aging, but it’s huge. Your spine protects your spinal cord and all the nerves branching off of it. Those nerves control everything — your muscles, your organs, your balance, your coordination. When there’s restriction or irritation in the spine, it can affect how those signals travel through your body. Over time, that has real effects on how you feel and how you move. Chiropractic care helps keep the spine healthy, which in turn supports a nervous system that’s functioning at its best.

And then there’s the lifestyle piece. This one’s important. Chiropractic care works best when it’s part of a bigger picture. We’re talking about staying active — even gentle walks make a tremendous difference. We’re talking about staying hydrated, because your joints and discs need water to stay healthy. Stretching regularly, getting quality sleep, managing stress. These aren’t complicated things. But they add up in a big way over the years.

So what can you start doing right now? First — move more. I tell my patients this all the time. Motion is lotion for your joints. Even ten to fifteen minutes of gentle movement a day can make a real difference in how you feel. Second — pay attention to how you’re sitting. Most of us spend way too much time hunched over screens, and that puts a lot of stress on the cervical spine — the neck — over time. Third — don’t ignore the little aches. A small problem today is a lot easier to address than a big problem six months from now.

And that brings me to the most important thing I want to say today. If you haven’t had your spine evaluated recently, now is a great time. You don’t have to be in severe pain to come see us. In fact, I’d love to see you before things get to that point. Chiropractic care isn’t just about crisis management. It’s about maintaining your health so you can keep doing the things you love — for as long as possible.
