Why Posture Matters More Than Ever in a Screen-Focused World

Episode Notes:

In this episode, Dr. Hunter Schultz from 920 Chiropractic Health & Injury Care in Green Bay explores why posture has become one of the most pressing health concerns of the modern age. From morning phone checks to long hours at a desk, our daily routines are quietly taking a toll on our spines and overall well-being. Dr. Schultz walks listeners through how a typical screen-heavy day compounds postural stress over time. Tune in to understand the real consequences of poor posture and what you can start doing about it today.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Hunter Schultz from nine-two-oh Chiropractic here in Green Bay, and today I want to talk about something that affects just about every single one of us — posture. Now, I know what you might be thinking. “My mom used to nag me about that.” And honestly… she was onto something. But today posture is more important than it has ever been, and I want to tell you why.

Think about your average day. You wake up, check your phone. You drive to work, sitting behind a wheel. You sit at a desk for hours, staring at a screen. You eat lunch scrolling through your phone. You drive home. You sit on the couch and watch TV. Then you fall asleep — probably with your phone on your chest. Sound familiar? We are living in the most screen-focused time in human history, and our bodies are paying the price.

Here’s the thing about posture. Your spine is designed to carry your head in a very specific way. Your head weighs about ten to twelve pounds when it’s sitting directly over your shoulders. But the moment you tilt your head forward — even just a couple of inches to look at a screen — the effective load on your neck skyrockets. We’re talking about the equivalent of carrying a small child on the back of your neck. Every single day. That kind of stress on your spine adds up fast.

Now here’s what I see in my office all the time. People come in with neck pain, headaches, tension in their upper back and shoulders — and they think it just showed up out of nowhere. But when we talk through their daily routine, it all starts to make sense. That discomfort didn’t appear overnight. It built up over months, sometimes years, of the same repeated positions. The body adapts to what you do most. And right now, most of us are training our bodies to hunch forward.

Let me break this down a little further. When your head and shoulders round forward consistently, a few things happen. The muscles in the front of your chest and neck get tight. The muscles in the back of your neck and upper back get overstretched and fatigued. Your joints in the cervical and thoracic spine start to experience uneven pressure. And over time, that can lead to stiffness, reduced range of motion, and that nagging ache that just won’t go away.

So what can you actually do about it? Let’s start simple. First — check your screen height. Whether it’s your computer or your phone, the goal is to bring the screen up to eye level rather than dropping your eyes down to the screen. Even a small adjustment there makes a real difference. Second — take movement breaks. Set a timer if you have to. Every thirty to forty minutes, stand up, roll your shoulders back, do a gentle chin tuck — where you pull your chin straight back like you’re making a double chin — and just move. Third — be mindful of how you’re sitting. Feet flat on the floor, low back supported, shoulders relaxed. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be intentional.

Now — when should you come see someone like me? If you’re already dealing with neck pain, headaches, shoulder tension, or that stiff upper back feeling that won’t shake loose — don’t wait. Those are signs your spine is under stress and it needs some attention. Even if you’re not in pain right now, a posture evaluation can show you exactly where your body is compensating before it becomes a bigger problem. We do that every day here at nine-two-oh Chiropractic.

Chiropractic care can help restore proper movement to the joints in your spine, relieve that built-up muscle tension, and give you a road map for keeping things on track long term. It’s not about cracking your back and sending you on your way. It’s about understanding how your body moves and helping it move better.

Here’s the bottom line. Screens aren’t going anywhere. And that’s okay. We just have to be smarter about how we manage our bodies in a world that’s designed to pull us forward. Small habits, done consistently, can make a huge difference.
