Why Hydration Matters for Joint and Disc Health

Episode Notes:

In this episode, Dr. Hunter Schultz of 920 Chiropractic Health & Injury Care in Green Bay breaks down the surprising connection between hydration and the health of your spinal discs and joints. He explains how the discs in your spine rely heavily on water to maintain their height, flexibility, and shock-absorbing ability — and what happens when they don’t get enough. Dr. Schultz makes the case that proper daily hydration may be one of the most overlooked yet impactful things you can do to protect your spine long-term. Tune in to find out how something as simple as drinking more water could help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support your overall musculoskeletal health.

Hey everyone, welcome back. I’m Doctor Hunter Schultz from nine twenty Chiropractic Health and Injury Care here in Green Bay, and today we’re talking about something so simple that most people completely overlook it when it comes to their spine and joint health. We’re talking about water. Plain, ordinary water. And I know what you’re thinking — come on, Doctor Schultz, hydration? Really? But stick with me here, because by the end of this episode, I think you’re going to look at your water bottle a little differently.

So here’s the thing. Your spine is made up of vertebrae, and between each of those vertebrae you have these structures called intervertebral discs. Think of them kind of like shock absorbers. They cushion every step you take, every twist, every bend. Now here’s what most people don’t realize — those discs don’t have their own direct blood supply like most other tissues in your body. They get their nutrients, and a lot of their hydration, through a process called diffusion. Basically, when you move and then decompress, the disc absorbs fluid from the surrounding tissue. It’s almost like a sponge. When you’re well hydrated, that sponge stays plump and resilient. When you’re chronically dehydrated, that sponge starts to dry out and compress.

And that matters a lot. A disc that loses too much hydration over time becomes thinner, stiffer, and a lot more vulnerable to injury. This is actually one of the reasons why disc problems become more common as we get older — because our discs naturally lose some of their water content over time. Now we can’t stop aging, but we absolutely can support those discs by keeping our body well hydrated.

Here’s what’s interesting too — it’s not just your discs. Your joints throughout your body are surrounded by something called synovial fluid. That fluid is what keeps your joints moving smoothly, like oil in an engine. And guess what? That fluid is largely made up of water. When you’re not drinking enough, that joint lubrication can decrease. And when joints aren’t moving smoothly, you start to feel stiffness, achiness, and that grinding sensation that a lot of my patients describe.

Now, here’s some practical advice you can start using today. First — sip consistently throughout the day rather than trying to slam a big glass all at once. Your body absorbs water more effectively when you give it a steady supply. Second — pay attention to your urine color. I know, I know, but it’s actually one of the best real-time indicators you have. Pale yellow means you’re doing well. Dark yellow means you need to drink up. Third — if you’re having coffee or caffeinated drinks, balance those out with extra water, because caffeine has a mild diuretic effect. And fourth — if you’re sitting at a desk all day, try setting a reminder to take a few sips every thirty to forty five minutes. Your spine will genuinely thank you.

Now I also want to mention — hydration alone isn’t going to fix everything. If you’ve been dealing with chronic back pain, neck stiffness, or that deep achy joint discomfort, there’s usually more going on than just thirst. Spinal alignment, movement patterns, muscle tension — all of these play a role too. That’s where we come in.
