Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Hunter Schultz with 920 Chiropractic Health and Injury Care here in Green Bay. Thanks for tuning in today. Whether you’re listening on your lunch break or on your way to work, I’m glad you’re here.

Today we’re talking about something that affects a lot of us every single day, and most people never even think about it. We’re talking about carrying heavy bags. Whether it’s a backpack, a purse, a gym bag, a diaper bag, or even a work bag loaded up with a laptop and everything else… the weight you carry on your body every day matters a lot more than you might think.

So let’s get into it.

Here’s the thing. Your spine is designed to carry load, but it’s designed to carry it evenly. When you sling a heavy bag over one shoulder, your body immediately starts to compensate. Your shoulder lifts up on that side, your spine curves the other way, and your muscles start working overtime just to keep you upright. And you might not feel it right away. But over time, those small compensations add up.

Now, here’s what’s really interesting. Your neck and upper back take the brunt of this kind of strain. The muscles along the side of your neck, your upper trapezius, the muscles between your shoulder blades… they’re constantly firing to counterbalance the pull of that bag. When those muscles are overworked day after day, you start to get tension headaches, that nagging tightness between your shoulder blades, and sometimes even that burning ache that runs down your arm.

And it’s not just one-shoulder bags either. Backpacks can be just as problematic when they’re worn too heavy or too low. A lot of people wear their backpacks hanging way down their back, and that shifts the weight far away from the center of gravity. Your lower back has to compensate for that, and that’s when you start noticing that low back fatigue at the end of the day.

So what can you do about it right now? A few simple things can make a real difference.

First, lighten the load. Go through your bag and ask yourself what you actually need for the day. A lot of us are carrying things we don’t even use. Every pound you remove is less stress on your spine.

Second, if you use a one-shoulder bag, switch sides throughout the day. Your body will thank you for that. Even better, consider switching to a backpack with two shoulder straps and wearing both of them. That distributes the weight evenly across both sides of your body.

Third, when you’re wearing a backpack, wear it higher up on your back, not hanging down low. The straps should be adjusted so the bag sits close to your body and the weight rides between your shoulder blades, not at your lower back.

And here’s a practical tip a lot of people overlook. Be mindful of how you pick the bag up. Bending at the waist and yanking a heavy bag off the floor is a surprisingly common way to strain your lower back. Bend your knees, get close to the bag, and lift it carefully.

Now, when should you come see us? If you’ve been dealing with recurring neck pain, shoulder tightness, headaches, or low back discomfort, and you carry a heavy bag regularly, there’s a good chance those things are connected.
